Let’s all go buy sports cars!

HIGHLIGHTS Australia’s new-car market rebounded to a record March result, up 0.9 percent on the same month last year. It was a fruitful few weeks for anyone selling a trade ute, with three – Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Triton – making the top six best-sellers’ list. It’s the big, exciting end of town that’s doing the best, though; sports cars costing more than $80,000 are up 31 percent month-on-month as an all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe dented 350 separate bank accounts.

LOWLIGHTS Traditional passenger cars took another beating in March – the gap to SUVs widened to more than 2500 units – and industry insiders say we’re unlikely to ever see them outsell high-riding wagons and hatches again. But several small SUVs failed to fire, with the ageing Ford Ecosport (70 sales) and Renault Captur (27) flatlining after healthy runs. Of the brands, Volvo (369) had a month it may prefer to forget if not for the arrival of the V90 Cross Country that attracted 21 buyers.

HOLDEN ASTRA

Despite b being on sale since last year, Holden’s great white hope has so far failed to fire. But it managed a healthier 719 sales in March, putting it just below Civic (787) but way behind new Impreza (1168).
