HATCHING AN IDEA

LETTER OF THE MONTH

Mitch Templar, Lathlain, WA

Toyota’s Tetsuya Tada (Redline, July) deserves a lot of thanks from affordable sportscar buyers and the company for which he works.

The Toyota 86 is on top of my list of cars to buy next, but with my family commitments I need something with four or five doors to carry kids and gear around every weekend.

I don’t want to wait until they start driving themselves before I can get some lightweight RWD heaven happening.

Family expansion is what is needed and I would love to see a RWD five-door hatch based on the 86 as the next version spun off this platform. Two extra doors and a higher bonnet line (to keep it in proportion) will add weight, so it will need a bigger engine, like a 2.5-litre or the 2.0-litre turbo from the Lexus IS 200t would be ideal.

No need for extra complexity like the trick differentials in some FWD hot hatches on the market now. And with a retail price of $35K, where do I sign?
