THE Brabham name will return to the Indy 500 for the first time in 23 years. Sir Jack Brabham’s grandson, Matthew, will race in the 2016 event on May 29 for Pirtek Team Murray. The 21-year-old is the third-generation Brabham to enter the famous race, following Sir Jack (five starts up to 1970) and Matt’s father Geoff (10 starts, the last in 1993). Sir Jack was the first to drive a rear-engined car at the event, in 1961, revolutionising Indycar racing in the process. No Australian has ever won at the Brickyard, but Will Power came agonisingly close in 2015, losing by a scant 0.1046sec.
