OCT 2015

Sales maintain record pace

HIGHLIGHTS The new-car market grew 3.4% in October to almost touch 2013’s record month, although largely on the back of business deals, rather than a rush of private buyers. At 3271 sales, the fleet-friendly Toyota Corolla may have topped the passenger car popularity list, but it was trumped by Toyota’s new working-class hero, the Hilux (3339 sales). Ford bounced back from last month’s dismal result, though Focus (715), Territory (596) and Falcon (435) still couldn’t make the Top 20.

LOWLIGHTS All eyes are on Volkswagen and the fallout from the emissions scandal sweeping the world. Despite a 6% slump compared with October last year, it held onto eighth place on the Aussie chart even after pulling models linked to emissions cheating from sale. The Toyota Fortuner seven-seat SUV (329 sales) had a strong debut, though perhaps as the enemy within. Prado (1184, down 29%) and Kluger (949, down 24%) both finished softer for the month. g g p p finish

HOLDEN BARINA SPARK

WINNER 433% INCREASE

Run-out deals and a dwindling number of rivals seems to be playing into the rough-and-ready hands of the Barina Spark. An all-new, much-improved model, simply called Spark, will lob here in early 2016.

BMW 1 SERIES

LOSER 39% DECREASE

Audi defeated BMW in October’s sales race by 29 units. Dragging BMW down was the recently facelifted 1 Series, which the carmaker says ran out of stock for the month. ce ecently ays
