NEXT time you’re in a new-car showroom, call the salesperson a “chauvinistic baboon”. After all, Australia’s advertising watchdog has given you the green light after dismissing a complaint about a dealer’s radio ad in which salespeople are given a metaphorical kick in the groin because “it is common knowledge that female customers at car dealerships at times experience unfavourable treatment from salespeople” who only want to talk to men. It said the term chauvinistic baboon is “generally regarded as an innocuous term of fairly common use in the Australian vernacular”.
