IN THE review of the new Audi RS3 (Wheels, June), Nathan Ponchard asks: Is this the first modern car to wear wider fronts than rears?

Well, it may be the first in the Australian market, but the US-market Pontiac Grand Prix GXP from 2005-08 attempted to tame a 5.3-litre LS4 V8, mounted transversely and sending 226kW and 438Nm to the front wheels alone by sticking wide 255 tyres on the front with 225s at the back.

Reportedly, it worked pretty well; much better than its General Motors platform mate, the Chevy Impala SS, that made do with a more normal arrangement. Id still take the RS3, though.
