APR 2015

It’s growing but the pace has slowed

HIGHLIGHTS Australians bought more cars in April 2015 than in April 2014, but the record results from March this year weren’t repeated. Private purchases were up 8.8% and government sales improved 1.7%, so it was hardly a grim result. Almost like a broken record, SUV sales were up by 4307 vehicles on April last year, almost the same number passenger car sales fell (4005). Two models soon to be refreshed, Toyota’s Corolla and Hilux, were the country’s top sellers.

LOWLIGHTS The gloss may have worn off for the Mazda 3 – or has the new CX-3 (1398 sales) cannibalised its sales? Mazda suspected the small SUV might cannibalise 3 sales, yet the 3 still (barely) beat Hyundai’s i30. The Mazda 2 also fell, from 1357 in March to 926, sliding from 13th to 18th. Overall, Mazda’s 10.1% market share is up year-on-year from 10.0%, while Toyota’s has fallen 0.3% (to 17.9%), Hyundai is down 0.2% (to 8.6%) and Ford has slipped by 1.7% (to 6.0%).

VOLKSWAGEN POLO

WINNER INCREASE 32%

A facelift has worked for the 2010 Wheels COTY winner, 829 sales in April earning a Top 20 spot and easily beating its 629 result in March. It also represents the hatch’s best month since December 2011 (926).

NISSAN QASHQAI

LOSER DECREASE 53%

Sales of the staple Nissan SUV fell from 1250 in March to a paltry 587 in April. Nissan says a lack of supply from its UK factory meant it simply couldn’t meet customer demand, limiting the Qashqai’s sales volume as a result.
