Vale Frank Matich

FRANK Matich, who died on May 11 aged 80, could have been Australia’s next Jack Brabham, but shunned international glory for a more regular life at home. A towering talent, Matich’s career spanned 16 years and netted the 1972 Australian Drivers Championship, 1969 Sports Car Championship, 1961 GT Championship, two Australian GPs and the New Zealand GP. Courted by several F1 teams, including Lotus and McLaren, he was also a talented engineer, developing McLaren’s first F5000 car before going on to build world-class racing cars of his own.
