MAR 2015

Corks pop for a record month

HIGHLIGHTS More new passenger cars were bought in March 2015 than in any previous March for 8% year-on-year growth. Every brand in the top 20 recorded an increase in sales, with Lexus the smallest – 674 sales up from 630 in February – and Toyota the largest, with a 2839 increase month-on-month to sell 19,082 vehicles. Of the top 20 models, 17 recorded higher monthly sales, with no surprise that private SUV sales were the biggest catalyst, up 14% on February and 20.4% year-to-date.

LOWLIGHTS Traditional passenger car sales declined 1.9%, yet they still fill the sales podium, led by the Corolla, Mazda 3 and Holden Commodore. Yet the trend at both ends of the market continues, with large car sales falling in the sub-$70K segment by 12.3% YTD, and the micro car segment (that’s Fiat 500, Nissan Micra and new Suzuki Celerio) plummeting 45.5% in 2015. The only segment to fare worse is the tiny (29 cars in March) luxury people movers business (down 48.3%).

FORD FALCON

WINNER INCREASE 40%

The Falcon ain’t dead yet. A 701 sales figure saw Ford punch out 200 more Aussie Falcons than in February, almost double its January figure (381) and its best since May 2014 (706). The new XR8 made up a large chunk.

MITSUBISHI ASX

LOSER DECREASE 42% DE 4

In a record month, and in a growing segment, the ASX failed to fire with 841 sales in March, down from February’s 1451 – which proved a flash-in-the-pan following January’s 869 and December’s 744 numbers. m ers.
