MICK'S TIPS LOVE THE BATTERY

WHY IS it that the poor old battery seems to be the last thing anyone thinks of when it comes to maintaining a car? I reckon it’s in part because there’s no moving parts and many believe it only has to work for a few seconds first thing in the morning. Wrong.

This is a good time of year to talk about these things, because the colder months are typically when they finally give up the ghost. Long winter nights sitting there in the cold is probably enough to see most of us off and batteries are no different.

READER RIDE DATSUN SSS

I WASN'T looking for a Datsun 1600, but when I found this on Gumtree South Africa, I got a bit excited. We were expecting a baby, so I was trying to get another classic past the wife, reasoning that we’d need something that fitted a baby seat.

The coupes are cheaper on the Dark Continent than they are in Japan, but they’re quite different.

It’s a bit austere compared to the JDM ‘Bluebird’ version, but rather than tizzy it up, I’ve come to appreciate the differences like the crazy paisley GL grille badge, plain seat materials and South Africanmandated white reflectors up front.

MOPAR LOVE PLYMOUTH VALIANT

LOCAL ENTHUSIAST Geoff Sarkies is a Valiant nut whose lovely R-Series is the star of this feature.

His Valiant was ‘hidden’ under a fabric cover when I first spotted it from the street.

But there was no disguising its distinctive body lines. I could see it was an early Valiant. No doubt about it. And hopefully the very first – the R Series.

When the R Series Valiant was released it was Mopar-love at first sight for a generation of young rev-heads. How could you not be besotted with the flamboyantly sculptured body?
