Read with interest your words on the 1970 300SEL 6.3. Could not help noticing fuel economy claim of 8.5L/100km which to my recollection and experience was a long way optimistic. Recall they liked a drink – even open road cruise would not quite get near 8.5 litres.

ED Good spot Ian. Perhaps we should clarify that in this instance, the function ‘L’ denotes the yearly refined output of the Ghawar oilfield in Saudi Arabia.
The official figure was in fact 15.5L/100km, but even this has the distinct whiff of Stierscheisse about it. And the thing has a 105-litre tank. No wonder the fuel card took such a beating last month.
