MONSTER MOPAR

SPOTTED recently at Sydney Dragway was the tough-as-nails VE Valiant of Victor Baralos. The 1967 sedan is fitted with a screaming aspirated 418ci Mopar small-block. The engine utilises an R3 block with Diamond pistons, K1 rods, 15:1 compression, Comp Cams solid-roller cam, W8 cylinder heads (99 castings), Mopar 520 intake manifold, Ferrea valves, Weber belt drive and a 1095 E85 carb by Eric Neifert in the USA.

The 8000rpm combination is showing 800hp and has run a best of 9.79@136mph in aspirated trim on a 235 radial.

MOOD’S MAULER

AFTER two years off racing, Darren Mood is about to return in his stunning 1988 Fox-body Mustang, powered by a Pro Line-built 596ci big-block with twin 94mm turbos.

The car has been getting a major rebuild after it hit water mid-track and tagged the wall, damaging forward of the front engine plate. Darren took this as the opportunity to make some major changes to the full-street, stock-bodied car: half-chassis; four-link; lift-off fibreglass front; Lexan windows; tubular front end; carbon dash; full-floater rear end; lowering the car three inches; and moving the motor back.

“It’s been a fair bit of work,” Darren admits, “but I want to go 6.50 or thereabouts. I just have to finish the cooler pipes and tinwork to be ready for the Kenda meeting in October.”

Darren is lucky enough to be able to do all the fabrication work himself at his Minchinbury-based business Mood Motorsports, but the boys from Dandy Engines in Victoria look after his engine program.

POWERCRUISE PONY

SYDNEYSIDER Greg Morris is in the finishing stages of launching his wild 1966 Mustang with a blown and injected Chevy small-block. The motor is currently getting the once-over by the lads at Dandy and will be shoehorned into the pony car as a Powercruise weapon and occasional racer. Greg doesn’t really know what the car runs, but it is well set up for track work, with a half-chassis and four-link rear end. The ’Stang will be finished in the next few months and debuted with a rusty patina wrap.
