READERS with long memories will recall Mike Reilly as the owner of a white LJ Torana that was featured as an 11-Second Street Animal way back in SM, Dec ’81/Jan ’82. The car later dipped into the 10s in street trim, but these days Mike gets around in something a little more sedate. “A year ago I bought this ’67 HR van as a ground-up resto, so I could use it for the occasional swap meet and car cruise. It runs a 186 six-banger, with a four-speed Opel gearbox and LSD rear end. The van is basically stock apart from a few details like the 17-inch Showwheels, the tiller and Dakota Digital gauges. I sent it down to Victoria and left it in the capable hands of Victor Reilly of Bucket Panels to look after the custom paint and signage [Yes readers, the same Victor Reilly whose injected V8 FC was featured in Van Wheels & Street Machine, way back in Aug/Sep ’81 – Ed]. “I FOUND this HT panel van that had been converted to an ambulance, resting under a lean-to near Dubbo. The rego label is from 1990; apparently it had been used as transport for mining workers. I thought it was pretty interesting! It has barn-style doors on the back, which is unusual, as is the moulded-in light on the roof. Spec-wise it’s a Belmont, but it was optioned-up with a 186 and disc brakes, and it also originally had bucket seats.
Although we found it in NSW, the fact that the nurse’s door is on the right-hand side suggested the car was from Queensland or South Australia, and there is a plate in the car that tells us the conversion was done by Superior Motor Body Works in Brisbane. The paint scheme was no doubt added long after it was an ambulance, and I’m hoping there will be some clues to the car’s past when we rub it back. It has a few odd things like the bull bar, but otherwise it is in really great condition; the floors are very solid.” Pics: Peter Bateman
“THIS this is my 1971 HQ sedan, running a 383 Chev fed by a 750 Holley and driving through a T400. This was a one-owner car when I got it, won in a raffle by my wife’s uncle, Bob, who I purchased it from in 2013. Sadly he passed away from brain cancer and never got to see it finished.”
“MY 1971 Charger runs an alloy-headed 360 running through a shift-kitted 904 with a 3800rpm Dominator converter. It puts power to the ground via a BorgWarner diff with 4.11 gears.”
“MY XC ute is running a new 351 Cleveland, while the trans has been changed from a C4 auto to a four-speed Top Loader. It also has a new 2˝-inch mildsteel exhaust with Pacemaker extractors, Performance manifold with 650 Holley carby, new 15-inch Challenger wheels, and date-correct Cobra cloth seats. It’s been lowered, with all new shocks and springs.
It was already painted in the Cobra colours when I bought it two years ago.”
“HERE’S my 1972 VH Valiant, ‘Bare Metal’. I use it to promote my business, Bare Metal Restos. When I started the business about 18 months ago, I decided to do a project to showcase my skills as a panel beater. The idea was to take a car that needed rust and panel repairs and finish the repairs to a high standard in steel, then clear-coat it to display the bare panels for all to see. All repaired areas have been file-finished to a standard where no filler is required.
As far as the running gear is concerned, it’s got a warm 265 six with a four-speed manual. Steering has been upgraded to rack-and-pinion, while the front brakes have been stepped up to 330mm discs with twin-pot calipers.”
