FAST cars are the darndest things.
The BTR four-speed auto in Mark Talbot’s turbo Barra six-powered XD Falcon didn’t miss a beat for 1500km of driving and countless passes across five days of drag racing, then it grenaded itself as he reversed it off the trailer once he got it home to Queensland. We didn’t know whether to call that good luck or bad luck, but Mark can see the silver lining.
“I’m going to put a two-speed in it, then I’ll put a 76mm turbo on the stock motor and see how long that lasts,” he says. “Once we break it I’ll build a motor for it, and if I can get 1000hp at the tyres I’ll be happy.”
Currently the motor is a bonestock XR6 Turbo jobbie with a set of injectors, and the auto was likewise standard with the addition of a 3000rpm converter. It ran as quick as 11.65 on Drag Challenge, but Mark battled against the torque settings in the standard Ford computer throughout the event.
“We just wanted to come down this year and see what it was like, then do something bigger and better next year,” he says. “I’d seen the event on YouTube and I thought it’d be great.
I’d rather drive my car than trailer it.” 1 s i s 3 1 b i t y d y Y I
