IF THERE was a trophy for the coolest car on Drag Challenge, Matt Smart’s KE10 Corolla would have been the red-hot favourite.
It runs a stove-hot, Weberfed 202ci Holden six with a healthy 175hp worth of spray and a trusty Trimatic auto, and it’s fast! With so many people stuffing Japanese engines into Aussie cars these days, it’s refreshing to see someone reversing the trend.
“This is the third motor build we’ve done, and it’s a black 202 with a factory block, crank and head,” Matt says. “It’s got forged rods and pistons and it’s had a bit of head and manifold work done, as well as a custom oiling system, custom exhaust system, and the nitrous. The motor makes about 320hp and it cracks along pretty well; we have a lot of fun.”
The car ran a flat 11 at Calder, but Matt submitted an 11.2sec timeslip to leave some headroom.
“I’d never driven the car on the street before, so the horn and all that other roadworthy stuff never worked,” he says.
“We got all that sorted, put some rego on it and here we are!”
