JOHN Kerr has done plenty of drag racing in his time and is no stranger to the concept of driving his car to the track, racing it and driving it home again.
He bought his Mercury Comet from a Californian wrecking yard in 1990, rebuilt it from a bare shell, and has been driving the wheels off it ever since.
ĒIíve driven from Sydney to Adelaide, Queensland and Melbourne a heap of times,Ē he says. ďItís never been garaged and itís been driven everywhere; itís got stone chips all over it and the seatís a bit torn from all the use itís had.Ē
The car runs a Dart 302 block stroked to 364ci with alloy heads and a 950 Holley. John made the headers and built the C4 transmission himself, and the nine-inch rear end sports 31-spline axles, a Detroit Locker, and 4.11:1 gears. ďThese cars all came with a 289, C4 and nine-inch, so itís all pretty standard, really,Ē John says.
ďI did Drag Challenge last year, and I run at all the Super Street and Nostalgia events, too. The car has gone 10.77, but I run it around 11.0 because itís not teched and thatís what the Super Street bracket is, so weíre normally up the front of the field.Ē
He was up the front of the field at Drag Challenge, too, finishing Runner-Up in the Dial Your Own class.
