DARYL ELLIOTT

HOLDEN LH TORANA

SYDNEY drag racer Daryl Elliott’s LH Torana runs a stout 427ci smallblock Chev, B&M Turbo 400 trans and 35-spline nine-inch rear, and it had a pretty clean run at Drag Challenge until a burst transmission cooler line caused a minor fire on day five. Luckily though, he was able to recover, make it back to Calder and run a pass.

“For me the event is all about the road trip,” he says. “Not only that, it’s a good way to test out your car and see whether or not it’s a true street vehicle.”

Daryl made the switch to taller 3.7:1 diff gears in the lead-up to Drag Challenge in a bid to keep the revs down on the highway legs, especially given that he was towing a trailer full of spares and tools.

“On day one we had no dramas and the car went okay; we just couldn’t get it to hook up. At Portland we did a PB to the 60-foot and the car ran a 6.63 over the eighth-mile, which was really good.

“Some of the cars we’ve been travelling with have had some problems and, as you do in this type of event, you just jump across and give them a hand. I’ve got some great friends who are also competing.” 6 r t p o g fr
