RODNEY BROWITT

HOLDEN HQ UTE

A CROWD favourite thanks to its wild launches, Rod Browitt’s HQ looks like an old brickie’s ute until he releases the transbrake. It contorts as it lurches wildly off the line, picking up both front tyres and buggering off at an impressive rate of knots for another nine-second pass.

“Mechanically, everything has been changed,” Rod says. “It’s got a nine-inch, the rails have been moved in, Paul Rogers built the Turbo 400 for me, and we just stayed with the LQ9 block and some Trickflow heads. We played with standard motors for a couple of years, but the new motor has forged rods and pistons, and still runs a standard crank. We’ve been helped out by Frankston Engine Centre, and it’s all controlled by a Haltech.”

Drag Challenge was the HQ’s first event since the rebuild, and Rod was pretty happy with the ute’s performance.

“We haven’t had much time to set it up, and we’re just trying to get some time in the car,” he says.

“Watching the Drag Week event in the States got me interested in this concept, and it seems to be the mecca for street cars, because you put too much time and money into building these cars to just have them sit on a trailer.”
