PRODUCT: Racelogic VBOX Sport

PRICE: $658

WEBSITE: vboxaustralia.com.au

AT MOTOR, we take our timing equipment extremely seriously, as awards like our annual Tyre Test and Bang For Your Bucks depend almost entirely on very accurate, very reliable performance testing data. For years, we’ve used Racelogic Driftboxes from VBOX Australia. Recently, though, we’ve acquired a new VBOX Sport for when we find ourselves on a drag strip with only a handful of cars to test and a day’s worth of photography awaiting on the agenda. The Sport is literally pocket-sized with no display to speak of, and is simple to use if you can read LEDs and setup a car’s Bluetooth. Suction cup it to the windscreen for satellite reception and to keep its critical LEDs in your view, it is powered by an onboard, rechargeable battery meaning no cables, nor fiddling with a cranky 12-volt socket. Battery life is six hours. Without a screen, the idea is that you analyse your drag runs or lap times on the computer later, but you can get your data to you in live time on your phone as well (which you can also suction-cup to your windscreen, if you’re really keen). We definitely like how the Sport flashes red or green based on whether you’re beating your previous efforts, like a delta time. We also really like the app’s ability to log times under specific cars for later reference, as well as customise the display. The Sport logs data at twice the rate of a Driftbox (20hz), recording to a new level of accuracy as a result. Overall, it’s perfect for track-day goers or performance testers who need relatively simple data – a nifty bit of kit.
