IT MIGHT SEEM odd to buy shoes for a job that requires sitting down the whole time They’re hardly a performance enhancement, and I bet plenty of you could heel-and-toe in Blundstones, but racing shoes can increase pedal feel and maybe even avoid a engine-destroying downshift. For me, they’re also a bit like footy boots. It’s fine when Max Verstappen struts around in fancy pink Pumas, but arrive at a hillclimb in the same and the pressure will be on to break the outright record. That’s why I zeroed in on the Piloti Competizione for club go-karting. They’re a bit overkill on the specification front. A Dupont Nomex layer is fireproof to SFI and FIA standards, however, and I was attracted to their subtle colour scheme and rounded heel. They’re instantly more rigid than my old entry-level Pumas, with a reinforced sole that offered more support when resting them on the interior’s floor. In normal shoes, after days at MOTOR driving different car, I’d also get sore at the point where the fabric sags past the sole and digs into the back of my heel. That wasn’t the case here; it was instantly easier to manage different pedal setups and judge braking feel. I was in heel-and-toe heaven. On top of that, the lace system is a cinch to use and doesn’t interfere with strapping. It’s not all roses, though – you’d expect better stitching at this price and they’re made in China despite the brand’s strong Italian feel and upmarket brand positioning. The fabric inside the shoe, and the heel’s red marking, also look like they’ll fray quickly. Durability suspicions aside, it’s a good shoe.
