ALPINE RING 2018 SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2018 BRIGHT, VIC THERE’S SOMETHING LIBERATING about driving through Melbourne’s CBD virtually traffic free as the sins of the Friday night before are being swept away. It’s in stark contrast to the glorious ribbons of twisty tarmac to be explored as a part of DriveMaster’s MOTOR Alpine Ring drive day.

With an undisclosed route, we were told to meet in the sleepy town of Healesville at 5.30am. Snapper iAlastair and I didn’t expect 95 people and 68 cars (from 17 different marques) to show up. It was like a high-society midnight club.

With such a large group ready to experience the best roads Victoria has to offer in anything from our Ford Focus RS LE to a Porsche 991.2 911 GT3, a driver’s briefing covered all the basics. Keeping your walkie-talkie on and looking out for each other was the order of the day.

Of course, without a detailed route, we got lost following a group of cars that ‘knew where they were going’ – they didn’t. Yet, it didn’t stop us having fun through the alpine region en-route to Bright.

After 1100 winding kays covered in 18 hours, we were spent... so cut us some slack for publishing this outside the 30-day rule.

What made the MOTOR Alpine Ring special is desirable metal being used in the way they were intended, on spellbinding roads. But it’s the people that made it memorable.
