PORSCHE CONVERT

Before driving a modern 911 I used to bag them as pretend sports cars

Brett Pember, on Facebook

Iíve just listened to your 911 Turbo S performance car podcast and felt compelled to express my feeling as Iíve driven a few Porsches in my time. First off, the Boxster was better than expected, but ultimately didnít float my boat all that much.

However, of the 993, 996 and 997 Carrera, the 997 was unbelievable. Youíre dead right about the feel from the driverís seat in that everything is (or can be adjusted to) exactly where you want it. The traction out of corners (we did Macquarie Pass in NSW in it) was other-worldly and definitely where it had a huge advantage over a Ferrari F430. On that same road, though, the front would go light under power (as expected given the layout), bringing power understeer with it. Thatís something the Ferrari doesnít suffer from (sorry, havenít driven the 488, but if ya wanna help me out...).

Put it this way: before driving a modern 911 I used to bag them as pretend sports cars.

Not any more. Iíd have one in a heartbeat, and probably over a Ferrari.

Happy to change my mind, though.

Including me in PCOTY 2018 might help!

The Porsche 911 has made a habit of taking out MOTORís PCOTY gong and it seems you now understand exactly why.
