AUDI HAS taken a leaf out of rival BMW’s book by dipping a toe into the dealer-fitted accessories market with its new Performance Parts range. Initially just available on Audi’s R8 and TT sports cars, the German maker says “additional model series will follow gradually”.
At this stage the upgrades are primarily focused in the areas of aero, chassis and interior. Most obvious are the aero kits, consisting of a front splitter and ‘flics’ and a massive fixed rear wing, all made from carbon fibre. Developed in the Audi wind tunnel, the addenda is claimed to substantially increase downforce, an extra 100kg of air pressure acting on the R8 at its 330km/h top speed.
For track junkies, Audi offers sport brake linings for both steel and carbon-ceramic stoppers to reduce fade, while two- of three-way coilover suspension stiffens the car for sharper responses. This works in conjunction with lightweight 20-inch wheels, which shave 7.2kg from the TT and 8kg from the R8.
Also available on quattro TTs is a reinforcement bar on the rear axle.
Engines remain untouched, however exhaust specialist Akrapovic has developed a lightweight titanium muffler for the TT and TT RS, the latter in particular a mouth-watering proposition.
Inside, an Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel and carbon fibre shift paddles are available, while TT owners also have the option of installing a carbon fibre strut brace in place of the rear seats, stiffening the bodyshell and shedding 20kg.
Local availability is yet to be confirmed, Audi Australia is currently investigating whether the parts will pass Australia’s strict design rules, however, we’d expect any parts that do pass the test to be offered at local dealers soon. – SN
