NOT CONTENT to be overshadowed by its E63 little brother, the updated Mercedes-AMG S63 scores the most powerful version yet of AMG’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, producing an epic 450kW/900Nm, enough to punt this limo to 100km/h in just 3.5sec in overseas 4MATIC guise.
Sadly, all-wheel drive is off the menu for Australian buyers, with local cars limited to tyre-frying rear-wheel drive. However, the rest of the mechanical package, including the nine-speed MCT wetclutch auto, lightweight wheels and updated Magic Body Control suspension system is all present and correct.
The updated S-Class also brings a new interior and a massive battery of driver assistance systems, allowing the car to operate virtually autonomously for extended periods.
The S63 will be joined by the 345kW/700Nm S560, which uses a non-AMG version of the 4.0-litre V8, and a pair of diesels, with the 463kW/1000Nm twin-turbo V12 S65 AMG likely to be special-order only. The updated S-Class is due to appear locally in December 2017.
