I’ve just been over to the 2016 Isle of Man TT and while we were in England for a few weeks hired a “NG Commodore” also known as the Opel Insignia. Our “NG” was a turbofour cylinder diesel with all the bells and whistles. I wanted to compare it to our 2015 VF SS six-speed manual V8 we have here at home in Australia, but found it doesn’t compare at all. Maybe it compares with a Toyota Camry, but nowhere near the SS.
I find the Commodore has presence, power, handles, stops, and sounds good. The interior is also spacious, it has great brakes, and sounds like a car should. The “NG Commodore” feels, well, Camry-like.
What a massive mistake Holden is making.
I, like many others, will be enjoying my SS until Holden realises it’s veered completely off the Australian highway.
Your concerns may well be valid, David, however you would’ve been driving the previous generation Opel Insignia, not the new car on which the 2018 Commodore is based. Hopefully the Oz-only AWD V6 model manages to retain some of the driver engagement we’ve come to expect from traditional V8-powered hot Holdens.
