VOLKSWAGEN Australiaís Passat will be reinjected with some overdue brawn when an incoming Golf R-powered variant lands later this year.

Set to reintroduce a proper sports sedan missing from the range since the R36ís exit six years ago, the 206TSI scores a 2.0-litre turbo four. Matched to a sixspeed DSG, itís set to make 206kW and 350Nm.

The new Passat will cut 100km/h in 5.5 seconds.

And while thatís no faster than the R36 before it, a lighter 1586kg kerb weight promises dynamic sparkle.

When it arrives the 206TSI will also score an R-Line package with 19-inch wheels, a bodykit, and sports suspension.

And crucially, itís faster than Skodaís Golf R-powered Superb sedan.

At this stage, VW believes the Passat 206TSI will cost around $52K when it lands this September.
